Urth Caffe'
"The leader in Shade Grown Coffee"
|
|
People
concerned about the environment want to know
if the coffee they are purchasing is shade grown. Many coffees are not.
Worldwide, coffee growers
slash and burn large parcels
of rainforest only to erect
shade tents under which they grow their coffee trees. Why these growers
don't use the shade created by the natural canopy of the rainforest has
everything to do with greed. It takes more time and effort to plant within
a natural, pre-established landscape.
Time and effort that will greatly reduce the coffee growers profits. This
particular loss of rainforest is responsible for the extinction and/or
displacement of over one hundred and fifty species of migratory songbirds,
not to mention other environmental problems yet unseen. Is it any wonder
people only want to purchase shade grown coffees?
Urth Caffe' has and
always will purchase shade grown coffee. In fact, we were the first coffee
company in the nation to purchase solely shade grown, exclusively organic
coffees. Worldwide, there are only eight farms capable of meeting out
rigid growing standards. These standards include the protection of the
land with respect for the existing environment. The rotation of crops to
avoid exhausting the soil's nutrients. Composing of organic mater back
into the earth as well as the ethical treatment of all workers employed on
these farms.
In the future, new buzzwords will come along. All sorts of new coffee
causes for people to champion and join. It is thrilling to discover that
people are expanding their concerns for mankind and Mother Earth. However,
the biggest thrill of all is to know that Urth Caffe' is leading the way.
And little by little changing the way the world drinks coffee.

Urth Caffe's "Organic Philosophy" |
What Is
Organic Coffee?
Certified organic coffees are grown on special, isolated farms that
are committed to using modern and ancient sustainable agriculture
techniques to grow incredible coffee. This kind of farming requires long
term thinking, integrity and respect for the soil, land, and people. These
rare growers use no harmful pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical
fertilizers. Organic coffee growers employ ecological and ethical business
practices such as recycling waste composting, cross-cropping, and fair
wages to workers.
How Does Organic Compare To Conventional Coffee
Farming?
Coffee is grown in Third World, sub-tropical regions where there are
little or no health regulations. Unfortunately, coffee today is one of the
most chemically treated food commodities in the world. Many growers are
short term thinkers who exploit the land, destroy acres of rainforest for
crops, pollute the local water supply with deadly chemicals and coffee
debris. The workers are often under-paid and exposed to cancer-causing
pesticides.
The Importance of Sustainable Agriculture in
Organic Farming
Just growing coffee without chemicals is not enough. The true
visionary coffee grower who wants to grow superior organic coffee without
harming the land, will seek to implement "intelligent sustainable
agricultural systems." These systems include techniques such as composting
mulch for natural fertilizers, cross cropping coffee with guava, corn, and
melons to balance the nutrients in the soil creating terraces, and
planting varieties of indigenous shade trees.
While applying these types of sustainable
techniques allows the farmer to retain a good yield, achieve superior
coffee quality, and renew a sense of integrity to the people an the
land...a lot of back-breaking labor and commitment is required from the
grower.
How Do We Know It's Really Organic?
In order to know that the organic coffee is truly authentic, the
grower must allow their entire operation to be certified, regulated and
audited by a reputable independent organization. Independent certification
agencies such as Organic Crop Improvement Association, SKAL, and Demeter
Institute audit each step of the growers and perform tests on the soil,
leaves, coffee cherries, and all production methods.
Once the coffee is harvested and processed, it must remain isolated
and clearly marked "organic", so it can't be tampered with or blended with
other coffees.
A reputable certification agency will also audit the shipping and the
roasting of the coffee.
This whole process takes place annually, and the farm, as well as the
coffee roaster must maintain all documentation of the audit/inspection.
After all of this, a coffee may be labeled with pride, "Certified
Organically Grown". Remember, if your coffee is not labeled "Certified
Organic", it may not be 100% organic!
Organic coffee grown by the world's most reputable and dedicated
"certified" organic farms produces a supremely elegant and rich cup...full
of body, flavor, aroma, and is naturally low in acids, oils, and caffeine. |

overpowers your cup, but a complimentary flavor that gently accents
